CHERRY RED EXHAUST?????
25 Feb 2013 21:30
So my first ride of the year and on this bike was a big fail. I finally got a nice day to get my bike out I started it no problem went to get my things together to leave (about 10 minuets) on when i returned to the bike it was puking fuel and the right side exhaust was super hot Turned it blue. bike was popping idling ruff i shut the bike down right away i could see the fuel leaking from the second carb from the right if your sitting on it. i gave the bowl a light tape and it stopped so im assuming this is a stuck float ? i then restarted the bike it fired right back up no fuel leak but the pipe that was super hot is know heating up alot slower than the other pipe it did warm up but slowly i went for a short ride and its got no power some backfire under load im talking 60mph is all it would give and it was slow getting there. But it idles like it should and its steady and starts right up. here's the best part
i just got this bike back from a carb cleaning and sync with new mixture screws and o-rings. total bill $350.00 My question is what would cause a extreme in heat like that ??? why would it idle but run like junk under load? i am going back to the mechanic tomorrow  im thinking its something the mechanic or do i have a new problem ?

Timing advancer might be stuck.
Could try lubing the pivot points.
Good Fortune!

i will look into the timing advancer WILL that make the extremes in heatand power loss. i know it needs air moving to stay cool but i always let my bikes warm up before leaving.(10 min or so) heck my 550ltd u could leave run forever with no issue and it wasnt super hot out yesterday 47 degrees. it worries me to think what it will do on a summer day when it 80 or 90 out. thanks for the tips though

If the bike was flooding the cylinder I would try a new plug or better yet swap the plugs and see if the problem moves.

Puking fuel and red hit exhaust could your floats be stuck or set too high? Just a thought. If your timing event is occurring too late as stated with a sticking points plate, you will have the glowing exhaust and poor running at lower speeds. Honestly, I would expect a lean condition to cause a glowing exhaust more than a rich condition. Could you have had junk that cause the float sticking to cause a pilot plugging?

OK i just pulled the plugs the side that is having the heat issue (right pair of cylinder if your on it) plugs were black the side that appeared fine were white which suggest lean on the left and rich on the right pair. i cleaned and re-gaped all 4 plugs put them in fired it up did the same thing im also having back fire out the air filters on the lean side, this make me think the carbs are not set properly and if thats the case how well were they really cleaned? I am going to check the advancer when i get the chance but i dont think this is it due to the fact it ran pretty decent before i took it to the shop NAKEDFUN-- it was a stuck float a little tapping on the bowls made it stop im lost and my local shop doesnt seem to wanna due anything about it

Steve,
If I were closer, I would help you out. From what you are saying, this seems to be a fueling issue and not ignition/advancer. Since you have two different plugs telling you the exact opposite, there is obviously something going on with the carbs. How are your intake boots/manifolds? Are they showing signs of cracking/ They could be craeting a vaccum leak and one cylinder to run lean, due to a weak carb signal. If you had marginal boots, when you reinstalled the carbs, you created some cracks. With the engine running, spray some carb cleaner using the straw, around the carb boots, manifold to cylinder head, etc.. and see if temporarily the engine smooths out. If it does, then that is your culprit. If it doesn't, then it is time to pull the bowls and using the carb cleaner and straw, shoot some cleaner into the pilot and main jets. You may have had debris that didn't get out, hang around and plug the pilot.

i was thinking carb issue as well i will do the spray test to the carb boots they looked ok when it was apart but i have been wrong before if they were leaking wouldn't that have shown when it was hooked up? also what would it mean if the mixture screws do little in affecting the engine when turned (they are new with new o-rings)that is the reason i was given for them being set at 1/2 turn out

I second on the boots. Been there before. Also the float could be set wrong on the two lean carbs.
