Split Collar Problem / Question. was created by 4TheKZ1000
Im installing a Kerker on my 80 A4 Mark II.

Im using the thick alum J-model flanges.

During the install process, I noticed that the split collar was not going into the exhaust port with the header. The split collars are hitting the outer wall of the head/exhaust port. Am I doing something wrong.....the collars are firmly seated on the header.

Seems to me that the split collars I used are to thick as they measure 2.01mm

I have some that I didnt use that are quite thinner at 1.40mm to 1.55mm.......

Call Chris at Z1E and he said they only sell the 2.01mm thickness/style and dosent know of any other types??

Should the thicker ones work????

Any help would be appricated.......Spencer

ok re read your post, these shims will warp if over tightened to where the flange isnt ninty degrees anymore so they dont sit as flat, if the thinner ones fit and sit tight to the pipe, cover the headers flared flange, and fully seat use them. then fire her up to check for leaks. shouldnt be much trouble.

Well I tried the thinner ones and they work fine. Could see some of the exhaust gasket though. The pipe was a bit jacked in the bore.....

I loosened all the flanges so the pipe was loose and it helped. I will try the thicker one again later. Will report back after dinner. B)

Ok, took header off and checked the O.D. of the exhaust port....1.71" aprox.

I put the larger split collars on the header and compressed them with channel locks, they set and stayed in position. I then measured the O.D. of the pipe and split collars....1.71" to 1.73"

I did the same with the thinner split collars and they measured 1.64" to 1.67" I ended setting all collars at 1.64". I will use the thinner ones and expect no problems with install.

I also ground down the collars leading edge to help the exhaust port accept the header and collars.

I would say that the larger collars would work. I had a few issues with the down tubes being out of spec and were adjusted. Its just so tight that any issure on fitment is magnified at the mounting point.

I will use a light coat of galvanized paint to seal collars.

I got header installed....went on like butter. I did grind a bit on the collars so they were 1.64" and flush with header pipe.

Hit collars with 2 light coats of cold Galv spray paint and mounted it up.

Thanks for all the help from forum members. When I enjoy my bike....your help made it possible and I am thankfull.
