Unauthorized Excursion - dropped parts into case

Warning! Intruder detected! Attention, J-model gurus...

So as I was placing the cylinder block back on the base, the rear cam chain guide got caught up somewhere. When I tried to push it into the proper position it rose up out of its slot and a small metal block went AWOL, down the oil canyon to crankshaft land! I think it was the 'cam chain guide holder'. I almost had it with the pliers, but it slipped. It must have gone back into the gears because I cannot see it at all now, nor reach it with my magnets.

So guys, Ya think I'll find it if I drop the pan, or is it gonna be time to put it on the bench and split the cases?

Forgive me if this sounds dumb (just consider the source), but if the engine is out of the frame is it possible to flip it upside down and shake the piece out? Ed

if it cant be upside down and drop out then pulling the pan and gently rotating the crank may give it up?

errrrrrr I did something like that once...... it wedged in the main cap cavity where the cam chain is. I had to drop the pan and R&R the main cap to retreive it....

Before you do anything, try this. You have nothing to lose. Try leaning the engine or bike from side to side . Hopefully the part will slide back and forth and the magnet on the drain plug will grab it. This may work or not and only if the part is in the pan of course. May work better without oil. So if you have oil in the engine. You will automatically find out if it worked when you pull the drain plug. If it didn't work take another shot at it without the oil in there. My front cam chain guide came out with the drain plug when doing an oil change. That is how I found out it was broken, LOL. If that doesn't work, and the other suggestions didn't work, then drop the pan.

Turboking, you're really scaring me.

KZJoe900 and all, sounds like there is probably room for it to get around, and removing the oil pan should allow enough access to find this bugger.
I think it is too large to go through the drain plug, but maybe when I pull the filter cover tonight I'll be lucky.

thanks
Rick

Filter is in its own housing and the oil is pumped into it via passages. In other other words, the oil filter resides in a sort of cylinder separated from the oil pan. In either case, you will be pulling the oil drain anyhow. So a little shake-n-bake beforehand won't hurt anyhting, :P .

If you pull the pan out and its not there i would try to shine a light up there and see if it can be seen. If not i have used compressed air to move it enough to get it with a magnet or let it fall out. I just always hated turning it over anything could happen. But the air could blow it to bad places also.
