I am reassembling a 1980 750-4 motor. My service manual says to install the cylinder base gasket dry except for the cam chain tunnel area. The gasket supplied differs from the original being a crushable metal gasket and I'm thinking of avoiding the gasket cement altogether. Anyone with a ya or nay on this would be welcome!!

And I'm torn the other way! My shop mechanic was fanatical about torquing everything and taking as long as it took (hell it was my time!) to get clean flat gasket surfaces and then installing gaskets dry. Didn't have leaks and it sure is a lot easier to go back. He's long gone but still has a lot of influence I guess.

I am glad I ran across this post.. I also installed a crushable base gasket and also have installed it dry except for around the rear cam chain and 4 bolts.. I am reading this post and it was mentioned to use cooper spray gasket on both sides... Does this mean I need to take the engine apart and apply the cooper base gasket sealer.. or will it leak if I don’t use it?

You would think it would be made clear in the manual as the manual does not say to use copper gasket. I don’t want to get this engine back together and then it starts leaking..
