Stock exhaust without any muffler clamps? was created by Freekz1000
I looked at the schematics and there doesn't appear to be any muffler clamps for a stock system on my 1978 kz1000. does the metal expand and seal as the motor warms up? I'm talking specifically about the two junctions where the muffler slides onto the two header pipes. When it starts there is a pretty decent air leak coming from that junction.

They used clamps. The part # for the header to muffler was 92037-208 which updated to 92037-1222 and 92037-1258. The clamp on the crossover pipe between the mufflers is 92037-185 which updated to 92037-1221 and 92170-1454. Hopefully you can still get these.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

It sounds like you do not have a stock exhaust system or maybe a PO has messed with it. Pipes 1 and 4 are welded to their mufflers; it should not leak there because it is welded together. Pipes 2 and 3 should have clamps holding them in the collectors, and there should be 2 clamps fastening the crossover pipe. Each of the 4 places with clamps should have gaskets between the pipes - you cannot see them when things are assembled as they are thin sleeve-like things that are inside the outer pipes at the joints. The crossover clamps and everything coming from the headers is all complete. I'll look into the muffler clamps specifically. Thanks!

Lots of good info on kawasaki.com, including parts diagrams , part names, part numbers, models sharing same part, availability, etc. Here's a link for help with navigating the site and finding information.
