Head bolts? Huh, last I looked they were studs and nuts. Only two bolts on the head of a 650/750 engine in the cam tunnel.

I have never read a single post about a vintage kawi that stretched a stock stud or had one fail. Can't say about aftermarket, but never heard of a stock one fail. They are only torqued to about 30 ft-lbs. The kawi manual says nothing about ever replacing them in the maintenance info.

Wow,,, you guy's are serious.lol...I have done diagnostics, # 1 and 2 cylinder are at 100 lbs, # 3 and 4 are at 130 lbs. oil is leaking from number 1, and the bike is hesitating when it did not before incident. What hppened was i had carbs rejetted and synced, later the #1 carb started leaking fuel at the boot(needle valve) one day I fired her up and the #1 cylinder must have filled with fuel, it bach fired hard and I visibly saw smoke come outta the top end head/valve cover gap she still ran after that but is leaking, I have done some research and fheard that I could try re-torqing the head and this might fix it, but I have also heard that the oil O-rings are prone to going bad since this bike sat for a number of years I may need to do this as a precautionary. I love riding and working on my baby,,, and really want to step up and learn more,,,,as a kid I always took stuff apart to see how it worked.... I'vedone many head gaskets on MX bike's just nbever dealt with overhead cams..thankz for replies

donthaveakawman wrote: What??? Have you all been living under Iraq??? you need to replace the head bolts. especially if they are "stretch type bolts" look in your repair manual to see if that is the case. I have seen many a rod thrown due to carelessness of this type. also find a decent torque wrench, and use gloves because of the lead.

I think donthaveakawman is addicted to internet porn, always talking about stretched rods and bolts! :woohoo:
So Don do you know how to check rod bolts for stretch on motors that actually have them,do you know the right way to change rod bolts?
As far as stretched head studs and nuts unless youre building some 13.5:1 monster or a turbo, keep the stock parts itll be fine. B)

If it did go boom hard enough to cause your head gasket issue you might want to do an actual leak down test to see where else its blowing out to make sure the rings are still sealing if the motor is still together.
You can always check the valves for sealing after head is off if its already apart. B)
