What do the large O rings do at the base of the cy

As it says in the subject what do they actually do. When I pulled the motor apart they were just sitting there sort of doing nothing, what do they do? any ideas, regards Neil

supposed to keep oil from leaking out of the jug base....supposed.....

Yep...they stop oil creeping up the outside of the cylinder sleeves. Kawasaki put them there for a reason and aftermarket gasket kits include them. :)

But when the oil goes up the outside of the sleeve, it can't go anywhere.

On all the big sleeve setups we do, there are no o'rings in there and it has never been a problem

If oil does get between the cylinder sleeve and the engine block, wouldn't it just help transfer heat from the sleeve to the block? With the Head gasket in place, and the fit of the sleeve upper land. I can't see a oil leak at the upper area of the sleeve.
The "" motor has No O-ring at the base, just the gasket.
