Gasket change out was created by Freekz1000
I recently acquired a 1978 kz1000 from my neighbor and it is stripped down ready to be restored. The tach reads 7500 miles, it runs good. Should I get a gasket kit and replace the gaskets since it would be easy to do while the motor is out? Or should I leave well enough alone since I don't see any obvious leaks or problems. It wasn't ran for three or four years and I got it going and put fresh oil in it. It runs smooth. Please advise.

Personally, with only 7500 mi. and only sat for 3 or 4 yrs and the bike runs good with no leaks, then I say leave well enough alone. But I would definitely do a compression test followed by a at least a crude leak down test (if the compression is low) to base my decision on. And if the compression tests warrants a tear down. Then yes, cheapest way to go is to buy the whole gasket kit.
