later smog head on a 77? was created by kawsakiman
ok, i'm not happy with the repair job on the #1 spark plug i did.i just don't trust it not to give me problums later down the road.i have a chance to get a head off a later model but this one has the clean air setup. i know it will bolt on but my question is, is there a way to block the four port holes so i can use my orginal valve cover? i just got done polishing it and imo, it looks better than the ones with the reed valves, plus this head is missing one cover.can i just weld them shut?i thank you in advance. i'm sorry, i should have stated it was for the 650 not the 1000. i already got the head so now i got to make it work.i looked at ape's websight and seen they are made for a 1000 and look trick but did not see any for a 650. aside from making my own any one got any ideas?

drill and tap the holes, and install pipe plugs, then you can use your cover.

they make block off plates for the smoge ports on the newer model heads suck as the mkii's and the j models.
i think both schnitzraceing and ape have them.

If you want to use your old style valve cover the holes in the later cylinder head must be plugged in some fashion. I would think that tapping and installing some short bolts would be easiest but you could also weld. If you weld, it would be better to do it with the head off so that stuff doesn't drop down into the combustion chambers. If you put something in the port to sort of plug them and act as a backing (that wouldn't later fall down into the combustion chamber), you could probably also plug the holes with JB Weld.

Your 77 rocker cover will not work with a US smog head and you will need the block off plates. However the Canadian cylinder head casting do not have the clean air passages- EPA can't cross that border...
If you don't like the APE covers get a Canadian rocker cover and be done with the fugugly things. I have a spare Canadian rocker cover - U2U if interested.

you can put an old style kz1000 valve cover on a MKII 79-80 head you just have to plug the 2 holes,i used brass plugs last time i did it just make sure head is off motor when you thread the holes for the plugs.

Let me rephrase what I posted earlier...the 77 rocker cover casting will not cover the casting of a US smog head and to me that looks like sh8t. The Canadian casting has the the small tabs at the back of #1 & #4 cylinders and covers the smog holes, which a 77 cover will not.
I guess I place as much emphasis on appearance as performance. JUst my .02 ( canadian )

maybe a gs1000 head It's kind of pretty
have one here waiting for a motor with a bad head and needing pistons to turn up local and cheap.
benefit from bigger valves
has same cam sprockets. Don't know if they will need indexing or not. Stuff happens slowly around here.
