Premium gas or regular? was created by Hatchet
I've been having some issues with my bike and looking for the source. The other day someone brought up an interesting point - did I recently fill it with premium gas?

As it happens, I did. I haven't had the bike running for very long. When I first fired it up I did so off a tank sitting around at the mechanic's. Not sure what it was, but I've gotta assume it was regular.

A week or two ago I took it for the first fill up. I put premium in it. I always put that stuff in my 90's Honda. Didn't think twice about it.

What's the scoop here? Could this be causing me problems?

The bike is a 1983 KZ750 twin.

I was told by another KZ owner to fill up with the lowest octane rating you can use without getting any engine knocking. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong here; this is something I've been questioning as well

There is a really cool topic on octane rating and detonation high compression hot rod motors etc... I always ran highest octane poss made huge differences in most of my bikes (non wore out)
my KZ seems to like lower to mid octane I believe its the detonation point highr rsating less flamable lower rating more flamable good solid comression 10 to 1 or what ever higher octsane wore out ol 1000 runs like a honey on 87-89

low to mid octane on my old motor makes a difference a good one

I have run 87, 89, and 93 in my 650 and almost always ethanol free. I haven't witnessed a difference in engine performance between the three grades. Perhaps you got some gas with water in it.

If you run a "fuel" with ethanol in it you HAVE water in your fuel.
Ethanol sucks the moisture out of the air.

Pump gas my Gpz750 motor likes 93 Octane.
It'll run on 87 but it don't like it.

Here we go again,Ive ran the 89 octane for years in anything that will run on it,now lots of my past projects wouldn't run on it.
Of course that's what they make 110 octane fuel for! :woohoo:
But I do run the 89 in all my daily driven vehicles including my old service van with 302,000 plus trouble free ethanol suckin miles! :woohoo:
