Clutch Rebuild Time!!! was created by havakaw
So now that it's 25* in Western NY,I figure it's time to re-buld the clutch in my '82 KZ 1100 Shafty.I'm looking at kits that have the steels,fibers and springs.It looks like the only people who have them at "reasonable" prices are EBC and Barnett.I could go with either kit.Anybody have any experiance with either,or reccomend one or the other?Thanks.

My opinion after using Barnett in the past is don't. You most likely can just replace the fiber plates with original Kawasaki parts, keep the steel plates and springs as they are. I can't imagine the springs or steel plates being bad. Heavier springs do no good other than giving your left wrist more exercise and cause unnecessary wear on the clutch cable and release mech.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

If your steel plates are not warped then just replace the fiber sones with the stock EBC replacement and use the EBC heavy duty springs.
I just replaced the clutch on my modified GPz1100 with this setup and am very happy with it. Smooth engagment and easy pull on the lever. If you can find them at a reasonable price I would use the stock OEM fiber plates. I went with the EBC because the OEM plates were way to pricey for me. Do some research and you will find back in the day the superbikes used stock clutch plates with just heavier springs. The OEM plates are really good just pricey.

How much cheaper are the aftermarket pieces compared to stock (are they even cheaper at all)?

All the stock parts are still available; here are the prices at Ronayers.com

92081-1114 Spring, clutch; $2.77 each x 6 = $16.62
13088-1013 Plate, friction; $7.77 each x 9 = $69.93
13089-1004 Plate, clutch, steel; $7.59 each x 8 = $60.72

Total = $147.27

Before replacing any clutch parts, should be certain that a proper clutch push rod adjustment has been performed.

Good Fortune! :)
