Oil Cooling Engine. was created by 4TheKZ1000
Ok...question to forum....

I want to and am going to install a oil cooler....

On cooling KZ 1000 engine.....I live in Ohio and its not uncommon to get 30 ..... 90+ degs days during the summer, tame compaired to some of the member climates on KZR.

What is a correct oil cooler size? I look at the lockhart and it looks very small. I think its a 3 or 4 runner cooler and feel its not providing the max cooling possible. I look at a Earl's 13+ cooler maybe at the limit or passing it. If Im going to put a cooler on my bike I want to max it out getting the max benifit.

Also....what is the max line size to be used. I would like to use AN6, AN8 OR AN10. I want to get oil to the cooler with proper pressure and be able to move oil around system.

Are there any mistakes people make? Any tech tips?

Thanks, Spencer

Try switching to synthetic oil first if you havent already and compare your oil temps B)

When I was researching coolers for my 1428cc build, I e-mailed Earl's in the UK. The tech support is clueless in the USA. But the UK tech support deal with a lot of the streetfighters over there so they were actually able to answer my questions.

Just remember to say you have a '80 Z1000 engine or they might get confused if you use the Kz designation.

I like the way this mounts over a Earl's cooler. Looks like a good cooler, will be looking at these also...thanks for the heads up.

I've had a "TRU-COOL B7B" engine oil cooler on my '73 Z1-900 for years now. It's a great unit. Got mine from JC Whitney.

I've got that one on my bike and it made a major difference. I've also got a small fan that I haven't installed yet to help out with the stop and go traffic since it still tends to get hot being that it's an 1105. When I do my rebuild I think I'm going to drop down to a 1075 and make it more of a rider and less of a racer. Overall I'm very pleased with the performance of the cooler.

1075 to 1105. = not much dif.

i used the earls. it seems to be the most popular. the bigger the better. space is the only issue.
