top end rebuild ???? was created by poolboy
I let this bike sit around for about three years and decided to get it running again. I got it running, with assistance of this great forum. It took forever to get it started, cold as heck. So I decided to do a compression check just to see what else I had to do. Heres the result.

Cyl
1- 2 - 3 - 4
dry 52, 82, 107, 112.

wet 105, 138, 148, 164.

no wonder I had a hard time starting this bike :S

Does this look like a valve job, and rings. What do you think ????

rings can and will stick after sitting for that amount of time.....could take some riding or running the bike to free them up....

did you take all plugs out during comp test?

did you have throttle wide open during comp test?

Before you tear it down, look at the valve clearance. :)

Remember, don't work on your bike so much you never ride it.

I had the plugs out for the test, did not have the throttle wide open during comp test.
I did not know wide open throttle was necessary during comp test, and please explain why that is necessary.

By the way, please understand I'm not a mechanic by any means. I've done a lot of mechanical work, but that does not qualify me as knowing a damn thing. I admire people who are qualified and certified in the field they hold.

In order for air to be compressed when inside the combustion chamber, air must first be sucked into the combustion chamber.

The supply of air for being sucked into the combustion chamber flows through the carbs.

If the carbs throttle slides are closed down, the air can't flow through the carbs, whereby there's no air sucked into the combustion chamber, and therefore no air to compress.

Good Fortune! :)

How did it run before being parked?
If it ran good before maybe try dumping just a little trans fluid mixed with gas down the plug holes and let it sit and work on the rings for a while, youve got nothing to lose B)

Wow, I did another comp test today and the results were dramatic.

Heres results for todays test.

cyl 1 2 3 4
old test
dry 52 82 107 112
wet throttle closed 105 138 148 164

todays test
wet throttle wide open 116 178 205 235
heck of a difference guys.
I can see why having an open throttle is important.

It ran good before I parked it 3 years ago wireman.
Thanks Mr Patton for the explanation, I read your articles a lot, thanks.
And 4TheKZ1000 , I did have the plugs out during test.
OldSchoolZ, I will look at valve clearance before I tear it apart.
I will try wiremans advice and soak it with trans fluid and gas.
Thanks guys for the advice, I will follow it.

I'll post again soon. :P
