Is it a pretty universal measurement for these bike or do they all differ?

The service fuel level as determined by the clear tube test is the most reliable method to assure actual fuel level being within specs.

With exactly equal service fuel levels shown by each and every carb as demonstrated by the clear tube test, it's a safe bet that the distance from the top of the floats to the side of the carb body will be slightly different in each carb, and likely none of which will match the distance as specified in the service manual.

When the tang adjustments have for whatever reason gotten totally out of whack, the measured distances with carbs upside down on the work bench should help get fuel levels back in the ball park, as a rough setting to thereafter fine tune via the clear tube test.

If able to achieve correct service fuel level in one carb (via clear tube test), could measure the distance from the top of the floats to the side of the carb body in that particular carb, and pretend that such measurement is what the service manual would provide.

Bottom line -- rely on the clear tube test, and don't be overly concerned with the supposedly correct physically measured dimensions inside the carb.

Good Fortune! :)

Alright so got the bike running well!:) The float bowl had been set at the wrong height and was causing it to bog! Thanks for the help everyone, especially Patton!

Gonna tinker with the timing and some brake stuff but other than that she runs great!

If she's running great why tinker with the timing?

The infamous last words  but just to really perfect how she runs. I may or may not right now, but the front brake is what needs work right now. Then she'll hit the road :)

I would advance the ignition timing, might be the spring advance is stuck you might want to check that first.
