Just curious. There are some messages flying about on the forum RE: z650 underbucket shims. My question is do these fit the bigger motors and if so why are they not used in preference to the above bucket shims?.

First Permanent ride the Z1R since Dec1977 (220,000km) as of June 2015
Second permanent bike 1989 FJ1200 dyno'd 140RWH, great bike.
Third ride is now the Frankenstein 1981 GPZ1100B1, 1983 fully recon motor fitted LOVE THIS BIKE
Forth my work bike FJ1200 1989 (same type as FJ above)

Im not sure....but the 650 buckets fit 900 1000....so I would assume that the bucket under shims do also.

Hi Bozo
650 buckets work in 900 / 1000 motors. Good design imo.. Trouble is if you want to call it that is the cams need to be removed to do a shim adjustment. Some hi lift cams need shim under buckets to prevent cam lobes from possibly lifting a shim out of a on top bucket. To convert to shim under buckets you need to also replace the valve spring retainers. Go on the APE web site for more info.
But unless shim under buckets are needed for your cams ,I prefer the shim on top buckets for a street motor
I do love that Z1R of yours
Dave

It is a pain to have to pull the cams every time you adjust your valves. not to mention worring about stripping cam cap bolts holes.

The 650 buckets fit, but their surface hardness can't handle the spring pressures that are run in the 900/1000s with big cams.

Thanks guys, the question was actually put to me by a person who is interested in Z900's, one of his desires is to hot the bugger up to blazes.
Personally with my setup I'd never consider shims under buckets for the reasons given.
