gpz valve clearances help needed was created by brave fencer
motorcycle wont start. not sure if the clearances are what would cause it to not start.
the tolerances are 0.18mm-1.20mm

my clearances are as followed

exhaust 1)0.16 2)0.33 3)0.11 4)0.18

inlet 1)0.18 2)0.15 3)0.20 4)0.20

they are all fairly close and i would believe that it should start or at least try to start but it seems that all its doing is turning over.

also is it possible to start the bike without bolting up the valve cover?

No don't try to start it with the valve cover removed! The upper chain guide/ slipper is in the valve cover. You would most likely jump time and bend valves trying that.
If you want, download the service manual in my signature it will have the valve clearances and the shim chart for the 1000 and 1100 J series engine.

some more details its a gpz 750 and the #2 exhaust cylinder is at 33mm is that going to affect the rest of the motor or should it still start? its almost completely together and i want to know if its going to be able to run with these clearances before i put it all together and then have to start all over and adjust valves again.

Clearance is .33mm? That's huge on that motor. Do you have bent valves? Are your cams in time? Have you done a compression test? If you do one, bolt the valve cover back down with like 4-6 bolts to guide the chain. When going back on, the tensioner needs to be released. That's the cap, 17mm nut size down under your carb rack. It will have a spring, and a wedge that needs to come out, than tighten the valve cover. Put the wedge and spring, cap back for the compression test. Or if you have a Leak Down Tester, you can do that without bolting down the cover, just keep a bit of pressure on the center of the chain so it doesn't slip as you turn the motor by hand.

Big clearance like that could also be a Valve seat that came loose when Hot, and the valve was open a bit when shut off. Worn cam lobe, worn cam bearings, loose bearing caps/ stripped threads, or the Bent valve scene.

just did a compression test and it was fairly even at around 55-60 psi across  starter clutch sucks in this motor and not sure if that could be a factor but even if the clearance 33mm wouldn't i still be getting good compression on the other cylinders?motor has fairly low miles at about 28,000 and doesn't seem to have been mistreated. head gasket looks fine but could it be the problem? definitely not going to rebuild this motor so any other help would be appreciated.

The throttle should be held wide open when testing compression.
If the throttle wasn't being held wide open, would repeat the compression test while holding the throttle wide open.
After confirming the compression figures, would add a teaspoon of oil down into each spark plug hole, and repeat the compression test. And compare both compression tests to aid diagnosis.
Compression test may be performed while using either kick starter or electric starter.

Good Fortune! :)
