Engine rebuild advice

I thinking about rebuilding my engine and I need advice. I was wondering if anyone has sent their engine to pit stop performance and cost. I could do it my self but I don't have all the specialty tools required I just have all the basics . I'm not rich and I plan to keep it stock I just want to freshen it up. I was going to just send the head to pitstop to get rebuilt but the engine has 38k on it so it prob needs a cam chaim I just replaced the top idler so it prob needs the bottom 2. Not to sure where to go I don't want to dig to deep and be stuck with a pile of parts in my garage  . Anyone have a base cost on what a rebuild would cost? THANKS!!!! Paul

I used Joe at pit stop for my head and cylinder work. His prices were very reasonable and he had a quick turn around time. I am very pleased with the results.

Thanks guys I sent Larry an email just waiting for a reply. I got a quote from Jo at pitstop it was a little high but he quoted me on everything including a polished kitchen sink lol. Just waiting to see what Larry says.

Did you ever decide what you were going to do? I am in a similar situation and would be interested in the outcome. I just bought a 1983 kz1000 police bike and while it starts easily, it smokes like a freight train. This is my first bike and really don't know what to check. I'm all for pulling it out and sending it to a pro but can't find a local place (Montgomery, AL).

I completely pulled down my 80KZ1000, I have no special tools and this is my first time doing more than a fluid change. It has been an experience, but with a little McGuyvering and patience, I have been able to get through. Guys at Z1, Mike is who I work with, are champions. If time is not an issue, you can do it..

Hey BB, any chance of answering your "Tight Cam Chain" post.... It's always good to get some feed-back.... That's what forums are all about! If you answered it someplace else, just tell me where!
Sorry to be slightly off topic!
