Compression on rebuilt kz650 engine was created by strobel5
So I just got my engine back into my bike after having the cylinders honed and some head work.
I did a compression check, cold, WOT, with starter and got; 1:155 2:150 3:125 4:175. My question is should I be worried about the lower comp. on 3? Also 4 seems high. Should I wait to check after I break it in?

there's definitely too much variance in those numbers. Even the 175 is suspiciously higher than the number 1 and 2 compressions. What kind of head work was done, and were valve clearances properly set afterwards?

I had the valves reseated and valve guides replaced, I had it reshimed but I actually never checked to make sure they did it correct.

Have you synced carbs since having the head-work done? Something you should do eventually anyways. And, feel free to correct me on this grey-beards, but I think syncing the carbs affects the height of the slides, if so, it would effect compression. So if they're out of sync, which they probably would be from having head work, that might be an easy place to start before taking apart any engine stuff.

I did a bench sync, I havent ran the engine yet just figured I check compression before I get ready to start it and break it in.

Gotcha, bench syncing gets you good enough to start, but a full running sync will do a bit of change. All of those numbers are high enough that it'll run, so you should be fine there. I'd probably just run a sync on them when you get it fired, and then recheck the compression. I suspect it'll improve. I wouldn't be too scared of those compression numbers until you got the rest set right.

Check your valve clearances, yes they can/will change when head gets torqued down on engine.
Check them again after about 500 miles are on the motor, dont forget to retorque head after 1st heat cycle and leeting motor cool down stone cold over night before doing it. B)

...if you're doing your compression check with a closed throttle, you might want to try it again with the throttle wide open.

how does it run does it smoke or do anything weird, might even be something as simple as the adaptor hose not seating properly on the head surface, have you run the bike yet since the rebuild compression testing is always hit and miss at best if your really concerned about the shape of your engine do a leak down test on it that give you a much truer idea of the engine condition. i would only be even worried if it was running badly or smoking give it some time to breakin before you start giving yourself an ulcer or an anuerism
