1976 KZ750 Twin
Generator Question was created by PaulyWally
As some of you know, I'm in the middle of trying to repair my starter clutch. It is assembled on the back of the "dynamo rotor". My question is: is the dynamo rotor supposed to be magnetic for the generator to operate properly?
I ask because my dynamo rotor has zero magnetism. But the bike has been recently used and the battery never drained.
So what's the deal?

Thinking the model at hand is electro-magnetic (requires battery voltage) as opposed to being a permanent magnet style.
Turning the ignition switch ON should produce some magnetism.
Take a look at the wiring diagram in KZr's FILEBASE.
Good Fortune!

IIRC the 76 750 B1 (twin) came stock with a 3 phase excited field alternator. So no the rotor will not be magnetic until the field is excited via battery voltage and the rotor is spinning.

Correct, applies to 76-77 model KZ750B.
(Except the rotor never gets magnetic, the coil generates the magnetic field)
