78 KZ650 Camshaft trouble after rebuild was created by mrscherer
I'm trying to finish putting my top end together after cleaning up my pistons and valves but have run into a snag with my camshafts. The cam chain does not have enough slack to allow me to install both camshafts. I have the timing set to TDC, the guide rollers appear to be inserted correctly, the tensioner is not installed yet. The cam chain moves freely with no kinks. I have the slotted ends of the camshafts located on the right side of the engine and am lining up the arrows as indicated in my manual but I still cannot get both shafts installed at the same time. Help is greatly appreciated!

Problem solved. I found that the chain was not hooked on the sprockets down in the crankcase; now that it is I have the necessary slack.

Sounds like the chain is not on the crankshaft sprocket correctly, it maybe off to on side or a link is being skipped, etc.
