Clutch Cable / Push Rod Adjustment was created by gremlin497
Just tring to put finishing touches on bike to try and ride today. Here's the problem:
What would cause bike to lurch/lunge forward and shut off when out into gear. I have adjusted adjuster & locknut on handle bars, adjuster mid cable and nut for push rod. Any suggestion on fixing this problem???

If everything is adjusted properly, and the bike has been sitting. Then the clutch plates are stuck together. You can try putting in gear, pulling in the clutch and rocking the bike back and forth. It might get them free. Again that's if the adjustments are correct.

I'll try that and see whats happening. I had motor work done (FBG) about 1 1/2 yrs ago, and only road it twice because carbs were not right. If you take tranny cover off will you be able to see if the plates are sticking together ?

With the clutch cover off, you should be able to determine if the pressure plate is moving outward when you pull the clutch lever in. If it is, your plates are most likely sticking. Usually, if you are getting enough movement at the pressure plate they will free up the first time you put it in gear and the bike lurches forward.
Make your clutch adjustments so you are getting movement at the pressure plate, it only has to move a few thousands of an inch to disengage the plates. If it still sticks, pull the pressure plate off and pull the clutch pack out for a look see.

Never pull plates out of bike. I did pull cover off and it appears that 1st and 2nd plates are sticking together. Should I pull the retaining bolts out and see whats going in there? Just dont want to screw anything up in there..........

OK , you have the cover off.
Unbolt the pressure plate ,
Undo them 1/4 turn at a time in a cross pattern until all the spring pressure is off them .
lift off the plate, springs, screws and all complete and set it aside .
Pull out the clutch pack complete .
With a pot, pan, paper plates, whatever will hold oil .
Put some oil in it, the same stuff you run in the bike .
Slide the the plates off the stack one at a time .

IT MIGHT BE LIKE A DECK OF CARDS SOMEONE SPILLED SODA ON . STICKY

Start at the bottom of the pack,,The inside .
Dip both side of the plate in the oil and reinstall it.
Do that to ALL the plates .
Make sure your pusher and pressure plate are NOT turning blue or chewed up .
Oil the face of the pusher and reinstall pressure plate .
Finger tight , then 1/4 quarter turn until the springs are loaded up .

WARNING
Be careful with those little bolts.DO NOT pull any threads .
Its tough to tell how tight they are with the spring pressure on them .
Put the cover on and you are done with the clutch .

Now for the adjustment ,,,,,,,,,,
Back off all the adjusters .
To adjust ,
Start at the bottom, engine .
Then mid cable .
Then lever .

Its no big deal .
I have to do it every spring after sitting all winter long .

Lightly sand the steel plates, oil and reassemble. Adjust the clutch.
