Stock Exhaust Question was created by DesertKZ
Hello all. Just picked up this KZ1000st and it looks like a battery exploded all over the stock pipes, completely ruining the chrome. I'd like to paint them black, but I'd also like to take about 12" off the end as well. So questions:

1. Has anyone opened up one of these cans and could desribe what the baffle looks like
2. If I keep (or modify) the baffle, will my back pressure be altered

I want to keep the dual exhaust look, just shorten up these 30 foot cans a little, ultimately about the size of the posted pic. Thanks.

Yes; if you cut the cans your back pressure will definitely be altered. Take a look in the FSM at the construction of the mufflers. The gases flow through a complex series of tubes; cutting it will ruin the flow. Here's a picture of the KZ650 muffler, I suspect yours are similarly constructed. Ed

Why in the world would anyone want short pipes? Same reason I guess as removing the fenders and stuff. Not my style.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

On my 750 twin, the stock pipes were so long they actually obstructed the top of the rear shocks. What a delight when I went to put on new rear shocks and I found out I had to drop the entire exhaust system...

.

I love the pipes, but I also love the simplicity of the shaftie rear end, which I feel the 70 foot cans kind of overwhelm. I am sure they are beautiful when chromed up new, but these cans are junk and I am trying to "recycle" them.

Have you considered replacing just the mufflers:

I got some of the dunstalls on my 750 LTD. They went on easy enough and gave the bike a healthy growl compared to the stock ones. However, be careful, they were longer than my LTD stockers. They fit fine and looked good, but it sounds like you want short ones.

Wow, those dunstalls look nice. I think I'm going to bite the bullet and take a sawzall to the mufflers, and weld in a universal baffle. I'm going to try and save the end cap, modify it to work on what I have left of the muffler so it still sort of looks stock.

DON'T SHORTEN, or "PUNCH" THE STOCK BAFFLES ! I've heard first hand how ungodly sick loud stock pipes will become after gutting baffles. It's not even a nice "racey" type tone, it will sound like one LOUD exhaust leak. As for the chrome, just have the complete exhaust sand blasted and then repaint with VHT or Rustoleum stove paint black.
