Any guesses how many crank teeth chain can jump before valve-piston interference? Also is there an easy way to get chain to jump back a tooth or so without cracking the case?

I don't know for sure, maybe a couple but I wouldn't try finding out.
You don't have to split the cases to work on the chain and tensioner assembly, just lift the valve cover.

Wasn't really trying to find out, just have a suspition that it did skip a tooth or so. But engine rolls over easily by hand w/ wrench on crank bolt. Just finished dry comp test, got #'s ranging from 60 to 80. Don't know if that's good or not.

Those compression numbers you listed are low. 160-188psig consistent on all cylinders is more in the ball park.

If not already done, would:
Hold throttle wide open during the compression test;
Repeat compression test after placing a spoonful of motor oil inside the combustion chamber through the spark plug hole;
Assure valves clearances are within specs;
Verify the compression test figures by re-testing with a different gauge.
Good Fortune!

K. So anyone know how to get the cam chain to skip a tooth or so on the crank without skipping on the cams?
