kick start cover gasket was created by pete greek1
I"m in the process of changing my kick start cover with another that I had chromed, there were no leaks, with the original, but the original gasket is sealed to the motor pretty good,I had the engine rebuilt a couple of years ago & it looks perfect, so can I double-up on the gaskets, or should I scrape off the old gasket, or can I put the new gasket over the old one & just torq it down, & should I use any type of gasket sealer...Pete

I would carefully remove the old gasket. There are some gasket remover chemicals out there that may help. When installing the new gasket sealer is needed in one specific area. Assuming you are working on the KZ650 (I cannot speak to the other engines); take a look at diagram E110 on Page 68 in the manual in the link below. Sealer goes on left side (as you face it) of the engine case where you will see a seam between the top and bottom engine case halves (the area is shaded in grey in the diagram). You only need it in that one place and only on the engine side of the gasket. I followed this instruction when I had my clutch apart and it has never leaked a single drop. Just be careful removing the old gasket so you don’t damage the mating surface. Ed

I used Hondabond 4. I think each bike maker sticks there own name on the same product, (I believe they're all made by a company called 3-bond); but in any case the Hondabond 4 worked great for me. Ed

O.K. 650 ED tried to give me an answer, but it was for a 650, & the kickstart cover is one piece with the clutch cover which uses adhesive on part of the gasket...in my kawasaki service manual, & clymer manual for the KZ1000, does not mention anything about an adhesive on the kickstart cover, .... what should I do ...Pete

My experience has been that the Kawasaki Service Manual tells you specifically where you must use a sealant (what it calls "liquid gasket"), and where doesn't mention it you don't need to use it. Ed
