Can anyone identify this part? was created by KZJOE900
So, I'm thinking I'm almost at the end of my first phase restoring my KZ900. Work done mainly cosmetic to the body, frame and engine, repairs to carburetors and chassis and wheels, tires, etc. Always planned on tearing into the engine but was hoping to ride for a few months. Maybe get through the winter (riding season here in FLA). But to my surprise, when I went to change the oil today a part fell out of the oil drain plug whole. Rats!!!!!! So looks like phase two (engine rebuild project) starts today. I'm hoping I can get it up and running by late October. Can anyone help me identify what this part? My guess is its the front cam chain guide. I will find out for sure when tear her apart. Strange thing is, I did a 150 mile round trip last Saturday. Didn't hear anything strange with no problems.

Here is a cam chain guide sold by Z1E. What do you think? Is this the same thing?

I would say cam chain guide. You can see the wear from the chain, looks to be eaten up alittle.
Hopefully theres one whole one in there doing its job.

My biggest concern is what could have caused this? I haven't adjusted the tensioner since I got the bike going and started riding. Chain tension seemed ok when I adjusted the valve clearance.

that's the lower chain guide in the block, this is a common problem from cam chain not being properly adjusted. how are the other rollers and guides ???

Don't know unfortunately. This got puked out of the oil drain plug. I guess it is fortunate for me that it did. I didn't detect anything wrong on my last ride. So I can't even tell how long its been broken. I don't even know if it had been replaced by the P.O. and the broken one left in the pan. Just can't figure out. It seems to run o.k. What are the indications (sound, etc...) would you expect to notice if this part is broken on a bike?
