Paroxyst wrote: I got a tip that 10w40 is not necessary unless you drive in wintertime. He said that if oilpressure warning light is coming on when really hot and on idle the I need to change oil to SAE30. Thicker oil with no viscosity is better because it keeps the engine a little cooler and keeps oil pressure where it should. I have not yet tried it but next oil change this autumn I will. What do you other guys think?
You should to do more research before making this change; it is a really bad idea to use straight 30w oil. No offense intended, but it is clear by your statement "thicker oil with no viscosity is better..." that you do not fully understand motor oil properties. Ed

If you have below 0 Celcius degrees in winter, I recommend you stick with 10W40 oil, it will help with cold starts.

You are still starting "cold" relative to normal operating temp of the oil. It is much thicker at 60F than it is at 230F or whatever temp it normally runs at. Do not run "straight" 30W in any car or bike, it will ruin it. I have also heard some older people claim straight 30 is OK to run in "warm weather", but any good multi grade is better. It's the reason multi grade oils were developed.Paroxyst wrote: Okay. Sorry zig for hogging your thread like this. So why isnt straight 30 oil any good then? I do not ride during winter so no cold starts.

Paroxyst; below is a link that you should take your time to read and understand. Then you can explain to your mechanic friend why he doesn't know what he is talking about. Pay special attention to the text in the area that discusses:
"I can't tell you how many times I have heard someone, usually an auto mechanic, say that they wouldn't use a 5W-30 motor oil because it is, "Too thin." Then they may use a 10W-30 or SAE 30 motor oil. At engine operating temperatures these oils are the same. The only time the 5W-30 oil is "thin" is at cold start up conditions where you need it to be "thin." Therefore, of course, at operating temperatures straight 30w is "thinner" than 10W40.
