Piston dropping at times
11 Jun 2006 15:23
Ok, my bike has been running great for several days now. I finally replaced all parts that needed replacing. I've got lot's of power now, top and bottom end, but there's a small problem. When I'm just starting off or putting along beween 30-40 mph a cylinder will drop out and you can tell that it's one all by itself. If I gas the crap out of it then it will jerk a time or two and run fine. Eventually it will do it again. I've checked timing, checked idle mixure, made sure in sync, and all check out just fine. I think it is #2 causing the problem so I changed the plug and the wire, and swapped the outputs on the coil(swapped the #2 and #3 from top to bottom of coil). What am I missing here? It seems like it could be getting too wet suddenly at lower rpm's. However, it can do this all of the way up to 55mph. Plugs looked good just before this started.

dirty plug will ID the cylinder unless it's missing because of not enough fuel.
otherwise it will be the usual
bad compression ala sticking valve
bad plug
bad wire
bad clams

Well when it first started doing this I was able to make it do it during idle. I sprayed some water on the pipes and they all sizzled away except #2. Also found the plug on #2 to be wet twice. Replaced plug and it still happened. Replaced wire. Better for several miles then back at it.
I can hear a tick at very low idle when it's not firing properly. Could that be a sticky valve? How would I fix that?
Not to sound stupid, but what's a clam?

That sounds like the way my brothers 82 KZ1000 CSR was acting. In his case the float needle valve was sticking causing #2 to flood out. Replaced all four needle valves and fixed the problem.

Those have been replaced recently. Crossed my mind though. I'm going to drain the bowl just to see if any trash comes out.

definatly check to see if something is sticking in the carbs, or if something(dirt) is randomly plugging off a jet. give them a good thorough cleaning, make sure the vents arent plugged, the usual. oh and one thing i do (probly not common practice) is to put a little bit of 2 stroke oil on the moving parts. it gets washed of by gas pretty quick, and keeps the parts lubed up when they would be otherwise dry when youre putting them together and making sure everything is working properly before the carbs go back on the bike and are hooked up to the gas line.
