1st oil change

I'm changing the oil on my 1982 1000 LTD for the first time.It has a Vance & Hones 4 into 1 header.Does it have to come off to change the filter? Thanks

I believe it does have to come off, on mine it does. Not for certain though.

How close to the oil filter housing(the round cover under the engine, about 5" in diameter?).

I have the same bike with a V&H on it. The oil filter will come out with the pipe in place. you have to have the bolt out of the threaded section of the motor, and pull the bolt down with the Plate and filter, at a angle. But it comes out. It is much easier with a center stand, if you don't have one hit up KZ1006/ Brian, he would more than likely have one. Here is a picture of how it goes together, also grab a copy of the service manual in my signature.

Also you should take out the Oil Drain Plug, which will allow the rest of the oil to drain out. It the other 17mm headed nut under there on the sump.

Thanks for all the replies I wasn't sure if the bollt could come out of the filter or if it had to be removed together.

Definitely Not me, I don't remove any other parts, just the drain plug, and the filter bolt/ filter assy. You get used to how it comes out, and it Will clear the pipe.

No Sir I was referring to the gentleman who said he was removing the pipe for oil changing,just assuming if you didn't change out the header gaskets each time you'd have a leak. I did get the filter out without dropping the pipe, thanks for the info!!
