Pulling the rotor on 650 - how? was created by faffi
Must have made a poor search since I couldn't come up with anything, but is there a wheel axle or something on the bike that can be used to pull the rotor on a KZ650B1? Also, do I need Loctite on the rotor/crank interface and/or bolt when refitting? There's no Loctite on the bolt now.

Finally, how much should I torque the retainer bolt? My Haynes doesn't tell, not does it tell how to remove the rotor. Useless

I haven't had time to look it up, but take a look at the link to see if instructions are in Kawasaki Service Manual. Ed

Thanks, Ed. Had a look and it said to use a special tool, which I believe is basically just a big/thick bolt with the right theads. But at least I know the torque settings now B)

The 650 used two different threads on what tool you need to remove the rotor. The chrome bolt going down through the triple tree below the handlebars works on some KZ650s, others a rear axle is what you need. Regardless it's always a bear of a job to get that thing loose most the time.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Thanks, Ron! BTW, there is some surface rust on the rotor, could this impact its performance? Can I sand it off with 400 grit or finer?

Well, all the possible bolts (wheels, swingarm, steering stem) are 16 mm and will fit the "new" F1 engine's flywheel, but the old flywheel/rotor require an 18 mm x 1.5 bolt. Bought one at the local hardware store, 50 mm long and standard 8.8 quality. It cost $16.50! Think I'll place it in a padded box after use :D
