are these washers supposed to be here? was created by KZ1000inaus
one removing the upper cam chain cog i dropped one of the oblong washers into the engine which i will hopefully retrieve this weekend.
But on looking at the Kawasaki diagrams it seems they shouldn't be there (unless i just can't see them). The pic shows the one that's left. They sit on the bottom and look a little home made.
Are they supposed to be there? if not are they a known modification?

KzInAus, The plate on the bottom left should be in that assembly. The whole sprocket assembly is designed to be shock (rubber) mounted.

So, the both sides are made up of two rubber mounting block (a bottom and top) both are different, a bottom plate and a top plate, both different as the bottom has smaller holes, and two dowel pieces with a larger head to the top.
I'll have a look tomorrow to verify my memory. [See slight correction below]

yea, you'll have to fish that out, get a light and see if u can spot it, mine was visible and we fished it out with a piece of welding wire, u could also use a magnet, it could have gone all the way down and be in the oil pan but i wouldnt bet on it, check those rubbers, if they've gotten hard replace em , they get brittle with age

Pulling the Sump would be a good Idea anyway, as you already have the Top off, and you can clean all the Gunk out. Make sure there is nothing stuck in the oil pick up screen, see if there is any metallic debris, etc.

The rectangular rubber dampers have steel plate built in to them, basically 2 pieces of steel with rubber sandwiched between them. There is no external oblong washer used, so I believe that a hack of some kind. Probably a misguided attempt to increase pressure on the hardened rubber in the sandwich. :)

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

I have a slight correction to my original post. Looking at the Model Z1000-A2, I realize I am incorrect about the lower plate having smaller holes.
On your model the two plates have 6mm clearance holes on each side and both top and bottom are the same.

As Ron says, the rubber dampers have steel plates built in to them, however, this vulcanised joint does separate leaving the plate and rubber block as individual items. Do check to see if there is not a plate on the rubber already.
