cylinder head, valves, was created by fireglass
Ok so I have a 1980 kz650 f1 Checked the valves exaust no. 1 .005 no.2 .005 no.3 .004 no.4 .006 intake no.5 .004 no.6 .004 no.7 too thick, could not get a gage in no.8 .004
checked the shims no. 1 097 no. 2 200 no. 3 250 no. 4 245 no.5 200 no. 6 200 no. 7 205 no.8 250
I don't think the bike has ever had the valaves lapped if I lap them how much well the shims change and witch way well they go up in numbers or down and how to check the valves to see if there bent or not? thanks..Lance

So you plan to take the head off and lap the valves? To know how much each will change you must measure the valve stem height before and after as lapping will make the stem come up higher - requiring thinner shims - but there's no way telling how much before the job is done.

BTW, why do you want to lap the valves?

I 'm lapping the valves because of compression numbers and I have one intake valve that I can not get a gage into so this valve is not opening like it should. so I'm wanting to know what I need to know to do a good job on the head. Lance

Well, if you cannot measure the clearance, it's the shim that's wrong, not the valve's operation. Do you have low compression on all cylinders or just the one with the tight valve clearance? If only on that cylinder, try fitting the appropriate shim first and do another compression test before stripping the top end. I had 4.5, 5.0, 5.5 and 9.5 on the various cylinders, a result of no or next to no valve clearances. After doing the valve clearances, the engine runs great. I haven't checked the compression again because I cannot be bothered to strip the top end as long as the engine runs good.

125-150 is fine and if the 105 was for the one with no valve clearance I'm sure it would have increased once adjusted. But that's of no point now that it's apart ;)

In PSI, my cylinders ranged from 65 to 135 and it still ran fine when warm, but was reluctant below 3000 rpm when cold. After setting the valve clearances correctly, the engine always runs fine.

BTW, back in 1981, German magazine MOTORRAD did a long term test on the HONDA CBX ProLink and despite about 100 PSI on each cylinder it ran as strongly as when it was new. Compression is overrated :D
