Help-kz1000 head gasket replacement was created by vintkaw77
I wanted to replace the head gasket on my 77 kz1000. when I remove the head nuts and removed the head the cylinder gasket seeped oil but did not totally unseat. Do I need to take the cylinder head(having to reinstall pitstons)off as well and replace the base gasket or is there a chance it will reseal when I put the head back on?

I've gotten away with it on an old Honda CB650. My mechanic at the time told me if its not disturbed at all then you're usually (75-80%) okay. If you think its disturbed at all, change and save the grief....

Just remember if you remove the cylinder, the rings will never seat again, so you'll need new rings and a hone. I'd rather have a small oil leak than go though putting the base gasket on and all the grief and money.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

its a good excuse to check/fix all those other things while youre in there.
Its been my experiance anytime you replace a head gasket or do a valve job on a questionable motor that shortly there after lose rings will rear their ugly heads,so why not just check things since youre in there? B)

If it hadnt seeped Id go for it but since it did you better change it. If you leave then undisturbed they will be OK

Even though this 1075 cc bored out motor only has less than a thousand miles on it, the piston rings wont re-seat? Why it has a leak just bad luck when the builder installed the gasket. So now im going to do it! Let me know what u think.
