KZ750E1 Cam positions on installation was created by -[DawG]-
Hi there everyone,

Busy bringing a 750 to life, but would like some advise please :)

We installed the cams incorrectly on this machine, and luckily found out before we caused any damage. The problem is though, the service manual shows how to aline the "IN" and "Z7EX" line etc etc, which I know about, but it does not mention which marking you should use.

On both cam sprockets, there are 6 markings on each: 2 x "IN", 2 x "Z6EX" and 2 x "Z7EX".

- My 1st question is, which "IN" needs to be alined with which "Z7ex"?
- 2nd, what does the "Z6EX" mean?
- 3rd, Any specific positions the cam lobes must be when alining the sprockets on TDC?

I also noticed that, if the sprockets are aligned TDC on the "IN" and "Z7EX" marks, and you turn the engine 180 degrees, you again get a TDC, but, the IN and Z7EX marks are on the inside of both sprockets.

I hope everything makes sense. If any doubt, please dont hesitate to ask :)

Thanks!

The 1-4 TDC at the crankshaft is the timing mark for setting the cams. The other TDC you refer to after turning is for 2-3. If you set the cams up with the 2-3 TDC mark aligned, it will work but your wires for your Ignition will have to be changed. Set it with the 1-4 TDC aligned.
Turning the crankshaft 1 revolution, will move the camshafts 1/2 revolution, so as you stated the timing marks won't be aligned at the cams. the sprockets are a 2 to 1 ratio. $ stroke motor, two revolutions of the crankshaft to complete 1 full cycle.

Hi Motor Head.

Thank you for the reply. Do you perhaps know which timing marks we must use?

You will have to confirm this with someone else, but I suspect Z6 is for KZ650. Z7 is for KZ750.

It's like that on the 550's. There is a KZ400-4 based on the KZ550 motor. The 400 uses Z4 marks, and the 550/500 uses the Z5 marks.

Which ever the KZ 4 cyl motor, you should have a set of cams looking like this, with the notches and lobes as per picture. Then the marks will become self explanatory.
