sealant on top end gaskets? was created by richrand
I'm getting ready to reassemble my top end (block, head, valve cover) and the oil pan. All surfaces are clean, but not milled. I'm very certain that this is the first time the head and block have been off.
Should a sealant (such as copper spray) be used on the base or head gaskets? I'd really like to ensure that they will be sound. Stuff I've read online ranges from "definitely" to "don't even think about it." Any help would be appreciated. I want to do this right.

What kind of gaskets do you have? Paper or copper?

I got the full set from Z1 Enterprises. Basically this:
www.z1enterprises.com/Gasket-Set--KZ1000...e--Full-Set-467.aspx
They seem to be all paper?

I use aerosol copper coat on all gaskets except fiber/steel head gaskets

I tend to put most paper gasket's on dry
and seem to have good luck that way.
Copper coat works great on a Brigg's
head gasket if we don't have one in stock
at work.

I would use something good like 3-bond on the base gasket because it should not be coming off for a long time.
Shouldn't need sealer on the head gasket.
I use the Ultra Black Hi Temp on the valve cover because they like to leak over the cam end plugs.
