Hi there, just wanting to get some ideas concerning my bike smoking on start up. It's a '79 ltd which will smoke out left bank at start up for about 3-4 mins and then will clear up. It only burns about .75 lt per 1000 km's which from what i read is okay. I have replaced the head with a very low mileage head, with new seals, gaskets etc. Guides are in good shape. This year I pulled head again and replaced seals with better seals thinking I may have installed incorrectly. Same problem exists. Heres the strange part (to me at least). If i park my bike leaned to the right hand side it doesn't smoke at start up, or if it does, very little. I can't imagine that 2 different heads, laek at same cyclinder for same amount. Any ideas?

.75 liters is .8 quarts
1000 km is 620 miles

That's above normal for oil consumption if the bike doesn't leak any oil.

I believe .75 lt (and its a rough guess) is about .7 of a qrt. Which is roughly burning 1.12 qrt per 1000 miles. According to what I have read that isn't that big a deal.

Actually you're right, my math is backwards, I might have overestimated the oil consumption though. Not as bad as i had mentioned.

smoke on start up is usually bad valve seals ...find a long hill and get going a little fast b4 the hill then let er coast to the bottom...then give it a shot of gas..if it smokes then its your valve seals...when the butterfly's are closed on any engine it creates a vacuum witch will suck oil threw bad seals..bad valve seals will foul up a plug now and then ...and u got to keep an eye on your oil level other then that drive er ..won't hurt a thing

I don't get a puff at the botom on deceleration, anyone riding behind me says its okay that way. I just can't imagine, 2nd head, 3rd set of valve seals still smoke in same cylinder. yesterday after parking with bike leaned to right for couple days, no smoke at all.

when it sits on the kickstand oil in top of motor is going to settle around the #1 valve and spring, its just gravity.
Try parking it on center stand if you have one B)

I don't park on kickstand anymore because of that, I park it leaned to the right with a block under right side crash bar.

Depending on color of smoke might not be oil at all, could be fuel, leaky carb or petcock?

If as you think, it is from oil dripping down the Valve guides do to faulty seals or loose guides. Then take the Carb, and the Exhaust off. then park it over to the left and look for fresh oil in the ports. You could apply up to 4 psi to the crankcase to aid in this diagnosis. must be a regulated low air pressure.
