kz1000j turbo and FI question was created by kz1000SF
I have a 82 KZ1000j as my project bike. I want to see what it would take to run a turbo. I know you can buy turbo kits but I have fun welding and fabing my own gear. Can you run a turbo on a stock motor? I don't want to drag this bike I just want about 30 extra HP or so for street. I also would like to know who has done a fuel injection upgrade on these bikes and if that would work with a turbo or is there another carb to use instead. (I don't mind having to use a microsquirt or something) thanks! Any input helps.

FI would actually be best for a turbo bike. You could use the throttle bodies from a GPz1100. I think you might have to upgrade injectors though.

I would get some low comp pistons in order to run a turbo, although the stock compression ratio is low enough to run under 10psi I would think.

I'd say go ahead, fab up your gear, get a set of GPz1100 throttle bodies, and use the stock engine with around 8psi of boost. Get an oil cooler to go with that.

Awesome! That's what I needed to know! What would i have to do to make the gpz throttle bodies to work?

I'd look at geting the 1982 or later injectors, as the 1981's tended to heat soak due to design problems.

Personally I'd get new injectors anyhow, with a turbo you'll probably need more fuel.

AEM makes a nice little computer too for small vehicles, called the EMS-4. Bit more expensive than the Megasquirt, but its a really nice package.

What did you do to the top end ???
No big cams in a turbo.. Weld crank, Turbo pistons. The list of improvements will grow as the project proceeds weather you think that today or not. It just kinda happens

I bought the bike for $300 but it was in pieces. The motor had the heads, came and barrels removed. I had ttp purchase several missing pieces. It has new gasgets, new cam chain tensioner and cams re-installed. That's what I meant. I will upgrade beds pistons in the futer but want to build a low psi setup that will work for awhile on stock.
