78 kz1000 won't go into 2nd gear?? was created by vintagebiker
I have just reassembled this 1978 KZ1000 a2a and have put the motor back into the frame and i am trying to make sure everything is shifting properly before i go any farther. It will slip into first and back to neutral but I can't get it into any highter gear. I am rotating the rear tire while I do this.
I hope I don't have to pull this motor out.
thx for any help

You have to spin it pretty quickly B)

If you haven't taken the gear cluster apart you are probably OK
You need the motor running to go through the gears.

The are three small ball bearings inside the tranny that will not allow it to shift into second from neutral unless your moving. The rear tire has to be moving fast enough to allow centrifigal force to spin these ball bearings out allowing the tranny to shift into second. It was Kawasaki's idea of making it easier to find neutral without overshooting into second gear.

I only ever saw that once in a tranny when i was school in 1981. That makes sense. Thank god. That motor is a B%&^$* to get in and out. I put it in with the cylinder head off. Much easier.
thx again what a relief.
