cam tensioner noise was created by jdbusch
so i put an APE KT1100 on my 83 kz1100 and now its making a god awful clicking grinding slapping noise and idle. any ideas? ive tried loosening it tightening it and im lost.
possible hole in guide? bad chain? stupid installer?
sounds like the chain is grinding on the adjuster tip.

i didnt think it did unless the guide was totally shot.
what else could be causing the noise?
wasnt not implying a bad tensioner just waht the noise sounded like

Did you turn motor over by hand while tightening it?

yeah valve cover was on. and i turned engine over slowly while i tightened the tensioner to take out slop.
all i did was remove stock auto tensioner and bolt on the APE turned it in by hand until i felt a little tension. then turned engine over checked play, turned over checked play, and so on . once i felt no more play, i tightened the set nut and fired it up then heard the noise.
tried loosing it up a lil with no result so i tried small increments of tightening with no results but at 3000 rpm the noise is gone.

Sometimes on a cold motor or one that has carbs out of synch you can here a little cam chain noise which is normal at lower rpms,not saying its definately the case here though.
does it go away after motor warms up a little?

not near the noie now but the stock tensioner was siezed up
