Drips of oil from stator cover? was created by SeattleKZ
I noticed my bike drips a couple of drips from where the wires come out of the stator cover. The bike is a 1977 KZ1000.
Is it normal to have small amounts of oil in that area?
Is it the crank seal behind the stator/rotor?
What parts would I need to get to the fix the problem?
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the Z1/Kz900/Kz1000 most common leak (besides maybe the tach cable seal).
It is normal, but not from the factory. There is a wet stator on these bikes (oil in the stator cover) and over time the grommet the wire runs through gets hard and oil begins to seep out.
You will need the following to stop the leak:
Good luck!

- Wire cutters
- Shrink wrap
- Soldering iron
- JIS screw driver to remove cover
- Possibly some high temp silicone on the inside of the grommet (this is debatable and has been debated)
Good luck!

I bought the grommet but decided to try and seal it with Permatex first.
First I cleaned the grommet and wires real good with mineral spirits ( paint thinner ) followed by soap and water then I let it dry out real good before applying the silicone .
I also pushed the wires into the strator cavity as far as I could before cleaning them so that when I coated everything I could pull the wires with the goo into the grommet
You should still replace the gasket though.
1000 miles on it so far with no leaking and it was a mess before.
