Shift Shaft Seal Replace 82 KZ750N Spectre? was created by rustbuckett
Bike sat for a few years before i bought it. I noticed an oil leak as I was loading it up at the seller's house -- he said it was a new leak, he'd never seen it before.

I found it today: oil seal on the shift shaft lever. Must have gotten stiff/hard as the bike sat unused.

It's obvious I have to remove the shift lever and then the outer aluminum cover in order to get at the seal to replace.

Q: is that outer cover just a gasketed one (easy remove/reinstall) -- or is it instead one of the halves of the engine case?

Thought I'd ask before taking out all the allen-head machine screws and then smacking the cover off with a plastic hammer.

Get some Kroil: www.kanolabs.com/google/ and spray the screws several days before doing the repair. While you're in there, replace all rubber seals, the shifter return spring and the gasket for the cover.

Usually an inpact screwdriver(the kind you hit with a hammer) is about all you'll need to remove the screws. Put a little of the silver anti-seize on the first few threads of the screws on re-installation.

Thanks -- Appreciate the extra info on how to prep the bolts and all - but what I was asking is if that outer cover is one of the case halves, or is it instead just an outer, peripheral cover (that was what the "Q" was for followed by the one-liner -- the "Q" was for, my "Question: -- guess i should spell it out next time and not abbreviate, sorry).

It looks like it's just an outer peripheral cover but have never had this engine style apart before.

Thanks.

I've not worked on a shaft drive bike as both of mine were chain driven, but I'd imagine www.bikebandit.com and www.cmsnl.com/ will have a parts breakdown to view.

In case anyone cares, here's the answer to my 2-part question:

Yes. No.

The outer cover that needs removal in order to access the shift shaft's oil seal is not part of the engine cases on a 1982 KZ750N Spectre. On that bike, the cases are upper & lower, not left & right. The cover needing removal is simply a dust/debris and protection device that covers some more delicate items and some electrical wiring related to the starter and clutch activation systems.

In order to remove the cover you have to remove the four cover bolts (5mm hex head), the starter cover (two 10mm bolts), the shift lever (10mm bolt) and loosen the left footpeg (19mm bolt).

The correct Kawasaki part number for the 82 KZ750N shift shaft is 92501-005 ("Oil Seal, TB13225.5)

You won't find that on BikeBandit.com's site for the KZ750N. For some reason, their engine cover diagram omits the shift shaft seal on the KZ750N's reference pages.

The seal can be found by looking under the BikeBandit page for a 1982 GPz750 (little "z" for air-cooled version) or KZ750R, and shows a BikeBandit part number 92049c.
