I'm a bit torn up over this one.

Finally got the bike put back together, filled the tank with new gas, gave it a kick and BANG - a few little pieces shot across the garage leaving a nice-looking hole.

The electric start did not work, so I tried the kickstarter.

Other than that, there's not much to tell.

I don't when the last time was the bike was run, but it turned over fine a couple of weeks ago.

Bikers are a rare breed.
Harley riders are a dime a dozen.

Would remove the generator cover and see what's going on under there.
Looks like something came loose and was hit by the flywheel.

May be possible to use epoxy putty to temporarily repair the cover.

Good Fortune! :)

Agree pull that cover and see what let loose. The electric starter is just above the location of the broken cover - could be when you attempted to use it something let go and was thrown into the cover and broke it out.

Once you find the cause and repair it, you may well be able to repair the cover with something link jbweld as a temp repair.

Alright guys, thanks for the replies.

I managed to pull the cover with some difficulty (the screw closest to the hole was literally sheared in half atomizer-style), and take a look inside.

The first thing noticeable was that the starter chain (?) was hanging completely loose around it's sprocket, and the electric start gear was now free-spinning with no attachment to the chain. The starter sprocket itself was missing several teeth.

However apart from the electric starter I'm not sure there was a lot of damage. I pulled the chain and electric start sprocket and the rest of the motor seems to turn fine. I'm guessing that it will still run with the kicker. Which is fine, 'cause I prefer the kicker anyway.

I'll post some pictures of the inside tomorrow for further opinions. This doesn't seem to be the crisis I had anticipated, but it's just my luck anyhow. Not everyone can say they've had a hole punched through their generator cover...
