Did trans shift before this ? Was bike rolling when you shifted as kaws wont shift up into 2nd unless rolling ( this is the positive neutral feature ).

If the failure to shift occurred while the bike was being ridden ---

Perhaps the shift lever is hitting against something that stops its upward motion short of effecting the gear change from 1st into 2nd.

Or perhaps the shift lever is loose on the shaft and slipping whereby the shaft isn't rotating far enough to complete the shift from 1st into 2nd. Tightening the lever might help.

Or perhaps the shift lever isn't positioned correctly on the shaft, whereby it's resting position is too high, and from there it can't go high enough to complete the shift from 1st into 2nd. Could loosen and remove the bolt, remove the lever, and replace the lever one spline lower where the lever will have more travel before reaching its upper limit of travel, and replace and re-tighten the bolt.

Good Fortune! :)
