loose guides in J Head was created by LarryC
Here's an example of loose fitting J Model Valve Guides.
This is out of an E.L.R. Head. You can see how black the guide is where the oil was getting by between the guide and the guide bore. This is not uncommon in J model heads and in fact, about the 4th ELR head in particular I've run into this situation.
The bike only has 12000 miles on it but oil consumption was high. The seals were all shot from age and #3 exhaust guide was dropping into the bore.

Could you ream the holes and use oversized guides to fix it?
