Piston Ring confusion was created by jason8887
I picked up a set of rings off of ebay from 3 different buyers. Each buyer claimed the rings were for a KZ750LTD 4 cylinder. I have been told (and I think I have verified) that the rings are the same for all 4 years of production (80 to 83). I *believe* the kawasaki part number is 13008 and each auction had a picture of the package showing the part number on it.

So, fast forward 2 months and I am finally getting around to putting the rings on the pistons. Big surprise, 3 out of the 4 sets don't fit. The part numbers on the boxes for the sets that don't fit are 13008-0009A (Teikoku piston ring co, all rings are too small) and 13008-5018 std (Nippon piston ring co, oil rings too small and second ring doesn't have groove).

Does anyone have any additional info on this? Does the number after the dash mean something other than when it was produced?

I'm kind of bummed, I think I may be out $120 bucks

Thanks
Jason

Is it possible you have oversized pistons?

Probably say something like "+0.50" on top of them.

There's no markings on the tops of the pistons except for the exhaust arrow. I'll measure them tomorrow when I get time to head back out

OK so u bought rings for 4 pistons from 3 separate buyers, and one of the ring set for one piston doesnt fit, correct ??? bad move, buy em all in a set, BUT, contact the seller and see if u can do an exchange for the one set, it shouldnt be 120 for rings for one piston

Kawasaki part #'s are more than just the first 5 digits. The correct part # for the Kz750 4 cylinder standard ring set is 13008-5031 per the Kawasaki Part's Diagram page.

According to the Ron Ayers web site, the first piston ring sets (13008-0009) are used in the 2004 ZX6RR.

I'm not finding the other part # you listed.

Thanks for the help guys.

double dub: where did you get that screen shot from? That looks like a lot better website than I have been using

I'll try to do some more digging to figure out what teh 13008-5018 std rings are from. At least if I know I might be able to ebay them

I haven't heard anything from the folks I bought the rings from, but they are all reputable sellers with good feedback, so I think there's a good chance that this will work out in my favor

It looks like the 13008-5018 std rings were used on the z2 750 from 1972. I found that by googling the part number. I don't think that bike was even sold in the US was it?

That's from the Kawasaki website. Click on Owner Info and Parts Diagrams or something like that. I think Patton has posted how to find those diagrams in the past.

13008 is like the class, in this case the class equals piston rings, the numbers after the dash identify the specific piston rings, as in KZ750.
