cylinders dead? was created by bbirch
I have a 2001 kz1000 when I was syncing the carbs i noticed two dont seem to do anything when I adjusted the mixtue screww all the way down. the other two about killed the engine when I adjusted all the way down. is this because two of the cylinders are not working? and how do I fix it.

could be they are not synced. maybe the throttle plates on the two dogs are not open much (or at all) at idle. Do the exhaust pipes get hot at idle?

Sorry to be blunt but if you can't tell if two of the cylinders are working or not you should take it to someone who knows what they are doing and not be mucking about with the fueling.

Easy to check if any are not firing is the exhaust pipe on the affected cylinder will be cold.
If the two cylinders that are possibly out are either 1-4 or 2-3 respectively then it is ignition related. Dodgy coil, Ignition pick-up etc.

the exhaust doesnt get extremly hot or anything it is in normal temp. I had a mechanic sync the carbs so I am assuming there in sync.

If all four header pipes get equally hot then all four cylinders are firing.

When turning the pilot adjustment screws doesn't affect the idle rpm, it indicates that something's wrong inside the carb, often being a dirty pilot circuit.

And should assure all other engine components are within specs before addressing the carbs.

Good Fortune! :)

I have had the bike about 2 years, But the carbs were just cleaned at a cycle shop. I then had a freeind who is a mechanic sync them since he has the mercery sticks. But he was the one that dicovered the problem.
