Oil change question was created by GTCpopo
I have a kz1000 and I want to do another oil change. The first time that I changed it I took the cover off the side I which I had to buy a gasket replacement. Do I really have to take of the side every time I do an oil change?

You just need to open oil drain from the bottom. No Need to open side cover. Which cover did you open?

No...there is a drain plug under the motor...I think it is a 14mm wrench size. That will drain the oil from the pan. In front of that there is another drain. It is for taking out the oil filter. That cover is about 6" across. Removing it will let the oil filter to be removed. Drain the oil from the pan first as there will be oil around the filter and it creates a mess if not drained from pan first. Loosen the center nut and slowly loosen the nut til the cover with the filter lowers. When replacing the filter clean any gunk from inside the cover and replace. If you use a new o-ring on cover, lightly coat the o-ring with oil before replacing. Would be a good idea to get a manual to help with your maintenance though. I think one of the regulars has a manual you can download in his signature line and there might be one in the database on here.

What year and model do you have? Oil changes require removing the drain bolt, letting the old oil drain out, and then removing the oil filter cover on the bottom of the engine(it's got a round shape with almost "sunbursts" on it). A bolt holds the filter cover in place, and goes through the filter.

what little oil is left in the cases, isn't enough to worry about
you could just change the oil a little more often, so any left over oil isn't completely bad, if it really bothers you

and since we are on the subject of oil I prefer Dumonde Tech GP4 oil

Thanks, Matt
