How to change the friction zone
21 Apr 2012 16:16
Hey all. I just performed the clutch adjustment as outlined in my manual.
The clutch is allowing me to shift OK, but I don't like the effect it's had on my friction zone. It's sort of become more of a friction point.
Will adjusting the clutch adjustment screw (the one down on the left side behind the chain cover) have any effect on this?
It seems like loosening that a tad might increase my friction zone. Or will it just prevent the clutch from properly disenganging?
Thanks.

If it has an adjuster on the cable did you back that one all the way in before adjusting the one on the clutch ? Adjust the bottom to specs then try adjusting the one on the cable & try that. You can change the free play at the lever with that one to get what you want. If you cant you can make minor ones at the clutch. Hope that makes sense

what do u mean by friction zone. what is it u don’t like, and or would like improved?
the only resistance u feel at the lever is the clutch springs, and friction from the cable and worm gear. this can be changed by reducing the spring weight, or cleaning and lubing the parts that move, from the lever to the, but not including, the clutch rod.
when u adjust any part, in the system, u r adjusting free play into it. for example, when u adjust the bottom worm gear, u r trying to set the free play (gap)between the worm gears end, and the clutch rods end. when u adjust the cable, u r trying to achieve the proper free play at the lever. having this play, allows the clutch plates to fully disengage.
Hope this make sense.

I thought he meant the spot on the clutch lever release where the bike started moving, maybe I misunderstood what he was saying too

By friction zone I mean the area where the transmission is neither fully engaged nor completely disengaged. Right now there's a very narrow area of clutch movement where that's the case. Its more like a point than a zone.
The bike is a 79 kz 750 and has an adjustment screw down near the clutch push rod. I'm wondering if loosening that would increase the friction zone.

It won't change the zone's (as you call it) duration, but it will move the spot on how early or far you have to let out the clutch lever to have the engine engage.
If yours is adjusted so that your engine grabs when the lever is close to the handle bar, or near where the lever is almost fully out, you can adjust the cable to move the engagement point to a position that's more comfortable for you, and it may even make the zone a little broader.

Adding some slack to the cable seems to have had the desired effect. I don't know if the friction zone is actually any wider, but it's closer in towards the grip now and I feel like I have more control over the clutch.
