All apart, now what.... was created by BB
Hi Guys,

I am doing a complete rebild of a 1980 KZ1000P. She has 36,000 miles on her, hasnt run in a while. I though I would pull the engine all the way down since I was going this far. Internals all look good, everything so far is within spec, very little wear. I know the cops beat on these bikes, but they were maintained to the book also.

I plan to replace the cam chain and all gears, new rings, gaskets etc.

My question is now that I have it all apart, are there any other parts I should look at/replace?

Thanks for the help, photos below.

Smart Move :)

Replace all the ancient cam sprocket idlers with Liska idlers along with that new cam chain.

Not much carbon build up for all those miles. Measure up your bores and pistons. You might just get by with a ball hone and new rings.

I'd do the shift shaft seal, and all the oil-rings (oil pump, internal oil passageway, oil filter cover and oil filter), tach drive seal, and valve stem seats. May I also assume that you'll be cleaning the head and lapping the valves? You might want to check your valve guides for any play in them. Just my 2 cents.
Good luck.

For sure what everyone else said, plus clean and overhaul the carbs, install APE cylinder studs, check the clutch discs for wear, replace if worn beyond 1/2 the service life, replace all the oil seals and use Viton valve seals, pull the rotor and look at the starter clutch, replace the springs and pins if worn. I've got a once used ball hone I'll lend you to do your cylinders. PM me on that. Polish the cases while you have it apart. Make it look as good as it runs. ;)

Awesome tips guys, thanks for the advice. I am pretty mechanically minded but this is my first project. Forgive my ignorance but please explain the ball hone process?

TomW - she is all at the powdercoaters, he is blasting everything clean for me and applying a clear wet paint to the engine, powdercoating everything else - she should look beautiful. I cant wait to get the pieces bacj and start assembly.

thanks again for the tips, if I am this deep I dont want to skimp now. Can I get rid of the valve cover tops with the hose connector? Seems like I could just put in plain covers?

A ball hone isn't as painful as the name sounds. Here's an example:
