Timeing chain was created by RAIN
I was wondering if anyone knows if the engine on a 1983 kz550 a4 is a collision motor or not so if the timeing chain were to fail would the valves be smashed? thanks.

Yes the valves will contact the pistons, thus bending the valves. If it is out of time several teeth it will also hit.
Also make sure the cross wedge is Not installed in the Auto Chain Tensioner, when bolting down the valve cover.

Yes it's an interference motor , trust me It happened to me when the previous owner had some one try to do the timing on my 81 550 ltd and ended up bending some valves. this was how I got the bike cheap . And the manual tells you after doing the cam timing to turn the motor over by hand slowly and STOP if you feel any resistance .
