Can i use stock cam gears? was created by jordan
I am just about to put together my buddy's 78 kz1000 motor, just waiting on the machine shop. It will be a 1075cc, .410 cams, and rs34 carbs. When i ordered the cams i was told "i hope you have adjustable cam gears". Is this something that i absolutely need? Are they necessary because the stock ones wont slide over the higher lift lobes?

the adjustable gears have slots for bolt holes. they r for degreeing the cams only. some guys just slot the holes with a file, other have found them too hard to file.
it is normal to degree an aftermarket set of cams, as they can run at dif timing specs, than the stock cams.

since u r building motors , it would be beneficial to learn how to do this. it is not difficult but u will need a few special tools.
OMR has a tutorial on it.

I have looked into degreeing cams and have adjustable cam gears on all my turbo DOHC I4 cars ive ever built. I just was wondering if i absolutely NEED them on this bike? Do guys run stock timing gears on their .410 cams? My buddy has spent about all he wants to on this bike for the year after the flatslides, wisecos, and cams id hate to tell him we need to spend some more money and wait even longer to have it together. Finals week is approaching and i wont have much time after this weekend to get it together.

You absolutely need to degree the cams which is impossible without adjustable cam sprockets, either homemade or bought. I run the exact same setup as carbs, cams, and pistons as this except I have I built head, those carbs are entirely to much for a stock head in my humble opinion. Expect all sorts of rideability issues with them since I don't think you'll be able to detune them enough to run well on a stock head or one even remotely close to stock.

Absolutely need, no, not really, the bike will run.

The cams will be a waste of money without degreeing them properly... Adjustable cam gears are only eighty bucks or something, I would absolutely get them.

So if it's not absolutely needed are you going to pony up for the new valves he's gonna need when they crash into the pistons and each other? The occurrence of damage is almost garuanteed if you don't degree those cams.

The 34mm flatslides have been on the bike for two seasons with all bone stock internals and they really woke the bike up. Runs great, idles great, and throttle response is outstanding. They will do just fine on this mild setup. I will have him purchase the sprockets. 80 dollars is nothing at this point in the build. Thank you everybody for your opinions and information

The engine that I had the Andrews 3X cams in had stock gears. The 900 engine with .418 lift has stock gears. Roy
